Emerald – May Birthstone
The History and Meaning of Emeralds
The oldest Emerald mines date back to 330B.C. and Cleopatra herself favored Emeralds in her jewelry. This gorgeous lush green stone has captivated people’s imaginations for generations. Emerald was believed to help wearers see into the future, cure diseases, and be able to determine truth from lies.
Just like Aquamarine, Emerald, is a color variety of the mineral Beryl. Light green Beryl is called “Green Beryl” while “Emerald” is reserved for the rich, saturated stones.
Emerald jewelry is also given as a 20th, 35th, and 55th anniversary gift!
Emerald Care and Cleaning
Emerald rates a 7.5 – 8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, however depending on the cloudiness or number of microfractures and inclusions, Emerald is very prone to chipping and cracking. This means Emerald can be worn in a ring so long as it is treated well and protected against scratches and hard knocks. Bezel settings are the most protective, and Emerald does very well in necklaces and earrings where they’re better protected.
Emerald jewelry should never cleaned in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush will have your Emerald jewelry shining bright!
