April Birthstone: Diamond
Diamond, one of the most recognizable and well known gemstones – and for good reason! While most people picture diamonds as the white/colorless versions, diamonds come in the entire spectrum of colors, including black. This gives you versatility in color and design while maintaining durability.
Diamonds are one of the hardest materials on earth. The same force that would shatter another stone would only chip or crack a Diamond – one of the many reasons diamonds have been used in wedding rings for years. Diamonds are so strong and heat resistant, they often don’t have to be removed when a piece of jewelry is being repaired, including during ring resizing. In fact, stone cutters have to use tools covered in diamonds to cut and facet a diamond!
Traditionally the most valued white diamonds have been colorless and clear (i.e. minimal to no inclusions). However “Salt and Pepper” diamonds are gaining in popularity. Lovers of these stones embrace the unique multitude of inclusions present in the diamonds to make each stone truly unique. While still being diamonds, Salt and Pepper varieties can be more fragile/brittle than clear diamonds due to the inclusions.

April Jewelry Cleaning
The Mohs hardness scale was made by scratching each type of stone against each other to see which was stronger. Diamond scores a 10 out of 10 because nothing else can scratch it! So long as there are no loose or fractured stones, an ultrasonic and steamer are both recommended for cleaning diamond jewelry. Salt & Pepper diamond jewelry should never be cleaned with an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. A soft bristle brush with warm soapy water will clean your jewelry without hurting the stones.
