Aquamarine is latin for “seawater” and is said to calm waves and keep sailors safe at sea. It’s no wonder Pieces has a birthstone the color of water! Aquamarine comes in a narrow range of blue-green to blue and different intensities from almost colorless to sky blue. Like Emerald, Aquamarine is a color variety of the mineral Beryl.

Aquamarine rates a 7.5 – 8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, which means it’s a very good stone for daily wear so long as it is treated well and protected against scratches and hard knocks. Aquamarine jewelry can be cleaned in an ultrasonic and steam cleaner unless it has liquid inclusions or fractures. If in doubt, warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush will have your Aquamarine jewelry shining bright!

Alternative March Birthstone: Bloodstone

The name Bloodstone (historically known as Heliotrope) comes from the bright splashes of red iron oxide inclusions prevalent in this dark green variety of Jasper. Bloodstone is also called “Blood Jasper” and “Stone of Martyrs.” Bloodstone is said to represent courage, strength, and vitality/healing properties, which is why it was often used in protective amulets.
Bloodstone rates 6.5 – 7 on Mohs Hardness Scale, which means we’re getting into the softer stone category. Bloodstone can be worn in rings with caution and a protective setting such as bezel settings. Bloodstone makes excellent necklaces and earrings, and is often carved into beads for necklaces and bracelets. Bloodstone is sensitive to harsh chemicals and does not tolerate ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush is all you need!
