Class FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Classes

What level am I at?

Level 1: No experience necessary, all levels welcome! The instructors will take extra time introducing skills, explaining terms, and helping students one on one.

Level 2: Intermediate. You have taken one or more Level 1 classes at the Jewelers Guild and have practiced basic fabrication skills including sawing, filing, drilling, soldering, using a flex shaft, and finishing. You can work independently on the project’s basic fabrication steps.

Level 3: Advanced. You have progressed through Level 1 and Level 2 classes with Jewelers Guild instructors and have demonstrated proficiency with a wide range of fabrication skills. You’re able to work independently and efficiently with minimal guidance beyond the project’s specific instructions.

What clothing/shoes are required?

  • Closed toe shoes are required. Wear closed-toe shoes that cover the top of your foot (tennis shoes or boots are great, ballet flats are not)
  • Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.
  • Tie long hair back
  • Wear natural-fiber clothes that you don’t mind dirtying up
  • Apron is optional
  • No long, loose, flowy sleeves or scarves
  • Bring close-up eyeglasses, an Optivisor, or similar magnifying help if you use it.

What do I need to bring?

For most classes the supplies and tools are furnished.  Please check the class description to find out. If you have a favorite set of tools you are welcome to bring them.  For longer classes you might want to bring a lunch. Other than that just yourself, your curiosity and ideas!

What if I don’t know what to make?

For best use of this workshop it would be good to find some inspiration ahead of time and have some sketches down on paper. You could create a Pinterest board to collect ideas and inspiration and/or bookmark some of your favorite rings on instagram. We will have a few pre-designed rings from which to choose if you are not able to come with a design in mind or sketched out.

What if I don’t finish my piece on time?

Our plan is to send you home with a finished piece. We will not pressure you to finish it on time however early planning will help you immensely. At the very least you will leave with new knowledge and the ability to finish your project at home.  If you find you need tools that you don’t have or that you would like to continue creating, we rent out benches in our workshop at a hourly/daily/weekly rate.  To learn more about bench rentals, visit our bench rentals page

The class I want to join is sold out.

We will have a waiting list. Just drop us an email so that if anyone drops out, you will be notified. We run workshops often, so you’ll likely get another chance!

I can’t make it to a class I have booked.

We offer full refunds for classes canceled at least 10 days prior to the start date. If you cancel later than the 10 days we can offer you credit at the Jewelers Guild for classes or merchandise.

I've never made jewelry before, can I take a class?

We offer many beginner classes however some classes do require experience.  Please check the class description to find out.

Is there an age limit to the class?

Check your class description for age-restrictions. Some classes are suitable for those under 18yo.

What can I make my ring out of?

Your class fee covers your ring cast in sterling silver, however gold, palladium, or platinum can be cast at an additional cost.

The ring is for someone else, how do I know their size?

Try and obtain a ring from them so we can help you determine the ring size on the day. We also offer a special finger-sizing device for you to use off site.

We are getting married and would love to create a ring. Is it possible to come together?

Yes! We love helping couples make their own wedding rings. Book a class together or check out our DIY Wedding Ring page if you would prefer something more intimate than this class.

Do you have gift certificates?
